Verifying Credentials and Accomplishments

Licensing:

In Washington State, licensing of health care professionals is a matter of public record, and can be checked at the Department of Health Website.

Publications:

The best way to verify publications is through PubMed, a free service of the National Library of Medicine, and the National Institutes of Health.  Nearly all peer reviewed articles and reviews that appear in medical journals are indexed on this site.  Chapters that appear in books usually are not listed.

If a physician or scientist has an unusual name, to find all their publications, simply enter the last name, and the initials, and hit “Go”.  If the name is common, a search can be done by specifying the topics along with the name, for example:

Jones JJ (epilepsy or seizures or EEG or brain)

to narrow the search to articles more relevant to epilepsy and related branches of neuroscience. Specific topics can be searched for in the same fashion as any online search engine. The searches return the citation and usually the abstract of the article. For most articles, the full text of the publication is not accessible without an individual or institutional subscription to the journal.

An alternate search engine is Google ScholarIt is usually better to use the Advanced Search Mode.
